VIÖN & MEM
"Onset"

Once,
the members of Viön and Mem used to make for a core of Warsaw 's
project EA. Since their ways split, Viön focused on relationships
between a sonic space and human perception, and Mem focused on decontextualisation
of sound material and experiments with primal structures of non-organic
origin. However, sometimes their ways join, and we can hear them both
on records like "Tektonika" on Polycephal, the reviewed now 3" CD-R
and live performances... "Onset" features four tracks: the first by Viön & Mem
is a digital, multilayered composition with a humming background and
some electro distortions that gradually build up tension up to the climax,
and then repose in a subdued sonicscape. Two other tracks by Viön
are a sort of miniatures: one starts off with a storm of clicking, which
in further progression evolves into a caustic, harsh sound in-flow; the
second is based on extremes - relaxing/new age tunes against disturbing
noises, clattering, and high-pitched sounds that eventually prevail!
"Onset" finishes with Mem's composition - a sort of illustrative music
that's made of field recordings melted with musique concrete, although
both are generated on Mem's laptop. It's an entirely digital affair,
although it's meant to sound like natural recordings. This is a very
spatial track, calm but disquieting, wherein we hear sounds of water,
someone's walking on broken glasses, scratching, all set against an electronic
background... Very nice.
